WHAT IS A COMPREHENSIVE PLAN?

The comprehensive plan, also known as a general plan, master plan or land-use plan, is a document designed to guide the future actions of a community. It presents a vision for the future, with long-range goals and objectives for all activities that affect the local government. This includes guidance on how to make decisions on public and private land development proposals. Most plans are written to provide direction for future activities over a 10- to 20-year period after plan adoption.

DOCUMENTS COMPLETED TO DATE

The University at Albany Graduate Planning Studios supported the development of a comprehensive plan for the Village of Menands in the fall 2017 and spring 2018 semesters. The fall Studio conducted initial stakeholder engagement and background research on the community and produced a community profile report about Menands. The spring 2018 Studio worked closely with Village of Menands officials and other stakeholders to carry out a public engagement process, which included a community survey and two public open houses. The studio work cumulated with an opportunity analysis report, which contains ideas and recommendations for the village to consider as they work on further development of the comprehensive plan.
