Gardening Tips-September

September Gardening Tips: As the growing season winds down and many or our annuals have been battered and beaten up by the record 7 inches of rainfall the last two weeks, it is the ideal time to freshen up the garden beds with chrysanthemums. Available is many colors from bright yellow to deep burgundy, hardy mums are a perfect replacement for those tired looking annuals. Plant mums in a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Loosen the outer root ball of the potted plants when transferring them to the garden bed. Always water in any freshly transplanted garden mums and continue to water during any dry spells. If you plan on trying to winter over your mums, don’t prune them back until early spring. Mulch the plants after several hard frosts with straw or evergreen branches. Mums that are left in their pots and used as part of a fall display will require watering more often as the plants usually arrive very potbound from the growers.

Happy Planting!
