Welcome to the Village of Menands website. As you navigate through the pages, we hope you find it both useful and enlightening. This site includes details on the various departments, emergency notices, general information and community events. Our goal is to make this website a comprehensive tool to keep the residents up to date with activities around the Village. It should also be a convenient way to access the services provided by the Village and to attract new businesses into Menands.
We are thrilled with the growth that has taken place in the Village over the past few years. Being centrally located in the heart of Tech Valley and the Capital District, business owners and developers are seeing the benefits in doing business here. We are conveniently situated just minutes from I-787, I-90 and I-87, making Menands an ideal place to live and do business. We are here to assist new and existing businesses to see their fullest potential achieved and to work as a partner for smart economic growth. The ultimate compliment is hearing that Menands is “business friendly,” which is one of the goals we set for the Village, and word is getting around.
In 2013, the Village Board of Trustees adopted zoning changes to the Broadway corridor. The changes were designed to encourage new business along the corridor, retain existing businesses and improve the quality of life in our community. Since its adoption we have seen a great deal of new development, as well as upgrades to existing businesses. We are very grateful to business owners in Menands for their commitment to our Village and business community.
With almost 200 businesses within our small Village and over 3000 people commuting into Menands daily, our business community is very diverse. Offering small businesses, (some having been in families for generations and staples of the community), to large companies servicing not just locally or nationally but some worldwide. Menands continues to grow and prosper and we are pleased to welcome new businesses no matter what their size.
We are also seeing new residential development. Albany International, formally the Albany Felt Co., that manufactured papermaking felts, moved to Menands in 1902 and was its principal home until 2011. We are so fortunate to see this beautiful property developed into The Albany Lofts at One Broadway. Dutch Village Apartments are also expanding with four new buildings. Construction of Dutch Village first began in 1938, with the first phase completed in 1940. The new buildings will be completed in 2016, maintaining the classic Dutch architecture used in the original buildings. These new developments add to the many wonderful places to call home in Menands, offering historic homes, scenic views, various styles of apartment complexes and beautiful communities where families have lived for generations.
Whether working right in the Village or outside, Menands is such a convenient place to live. We have a wonderful school district, offer great services and have a sense of community that is second to none. There are several churches of various denominations as well as two cemeteries including Albany Rural Cemetery, founded in 1841 and resting place of President Chester A. Arthur, and St. Agnes Cemetery, founded in 1867. Both have a beauty and tranquility that is enjoyed by many for quiet walks, historic tours, veterans’ ceremonies and other peaceful and respectful events.
We believe we are a gem within the Capital District and are proud that we are recognized for our ideal location and unique community. We will continue to strive to make the Village of Menands a place that businesses and residents will want to call home.
Welcome to Menands!
